As I was running errands last week in the city I stopped in at a few galleries and found two shows of note.

One is Heller Gallery in the Meat Packing District. They’re highlighting “New Works in Glass.” An artist there named Steffen Dam really caught my eye with his tiny sculptures, which look like sea creatures such as jellyfish and protozoa in beakers.

Arcadia Gallery in Soho, which is almost all hyper realistic painting in “Trick of the Eye”, has a collection of objectively skilled artists rare to galleries these days. One that stuck out to me is Natalie Featherston, who at first glance is just taping up her kids crayon drawings. Looking closer reveals, true to the gallery’s form, the precision in which she photo-realistically painted children’s scribbling. Which does make one reflect on the value of the marks of one’s own 5 year old.

No need to rush out to these shows. But if you happen to be in the area, stop in.
